Bettie Page, the pin-up queen, died yesterday at the age of 85. Page suffered a heart attack last week and had been on life support since at Kindred Hospital in Los Angeles. The news of her death saddened many close to the icon, who with her randy pictures assisted in flipping the script of the way women embraced their sexuality back in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Her sharp brunette hair, with the blunt bangs, her curvy figure and mixture of innocence and dominance made her photographs live on for years. Her image and pop culture status rivals that of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean and each year a new generation has found their naughty girl next door to adore.  Page left the modeling and pop culture world nearly 30 years ago, and has requested that any time she had done interviews since that her pictures were not taken.

She had said in previous interviews, “I have no idea why I’m the only model who has had so much fame so long after quitting work. I want to be remembered, as I was when I was young and in my golden times. . . . I want to be remembered as the woman who changed people’s perspectives concerning nudity in its natural form.“ The woman, whose iconic bondage and pin-up pictures are still seen to this day on everything from lunch boxes to lighters to posters in college dorm rooms, gave woman a sense of ownership over their own sexual expression and allowance to be strong, yet attractive. She will surely be missed, but her beauty has endured and will continue to do so for ages.

So usually I love a Top Chef season. Sure in the beginning it’s slow because there is like literally way too many cooks in the kitchen. And you don’t know these people from holes in the wall, so you can’t route for one person or know if they are lucking out or actually working for it. But usually Bravo casts their reality programs so well which makes me like a lot of the people from the beginning, but not so much this go around. I waited until a few chefs had packed up their knives and left until I started recapping the shows.

This week’s episode had the chefs teaming up, after Hosea won the quickfire challenge that had him above the rest in his skilled palette, to create dishes for Gail Simmons’ bridal shower. Simmons is a judge on the program and gave the chefs a list of ingredients that might not be so loved by her and the 40 women, as well as Food & Wine Editor in Chief Dana Cowin attending the celebration of her upcoming nuptials. The teams were also asked to create a course in response to the wedding quote “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”, so the teams of three were set to create dishes that would go outside the box of standard catering hall tricks and would incorporate the idea of the wedding traditions.

Right away, “Team New” was off to a rocky start with Daniel, Eugene and poor Hootie Ho Carla attempting to do fried sushi – ICK! “Team Borrowed” on the other hand drew from the challenge and had a lovely idea to borrow the Indian style of cooking from Radhika’s heritage and it gave Jamie a time to shine with another soup like dish and Ariane with a beautifully cooked piece of meat, namely lamb. “Team Old” was quickfire winner Hosea with Stefan and Jeff and they stuck to classic dishes with flare, which all involved tomatoes. And finally “Team Blue”, made up of Leah, Fabio & Melissa, which had a great challenge considering there is not one piece of food that is blue, so they looked deeper into the challenge and went the seafood route. Shopping and cooking was a smooth endeavor for all teams, except “Team New”, who made poor choices in their course meals, i.e. cooked sushi and just throwing in poorly cooked rice into a meal.

To avoid the recap of forty women discussing the integrity of tomato gazpacho, sea bass and salads, let’s just get to the winners. “Team Borrowed” rocked the challenge and they won, with the top prize going to Ariane, for the second week in a row, for her ability to continuously put together great pieces of meat! Jamie was shocked that she didn’t win the challenge, since she considered herself the leader and decision maker of the group, but apparently never made that point clear to judges, says Tom Colichio. Anywhos, obviously the losers were “Team New” and not so obvious “Team Blue”. When they were called in, it was obvious to everyone involved that while Chilean Sea Bass isn’t ground breaking food, it wasn’t going to be the end of the road for Leah, Melissa or Fabio, which is why he gave up on defending the dish. All the judges wanted were the heads of “Team New”. Basically their dishes were close to being inedible, with put it together yourself sushi and a salad with poorly cooked mushrooms sitting at the bottom of the plate. Carla said that she was unimpressed with the dishes from the beginning and should have stood up for her ideas, but alas she did not. She also called out Daniel for the one adding these weird mushrooms. Eugene was all sorts of messed up by saying he could fix bad rice (NOT POSSIBLE) and did a poor job of defending the dishes, but at least he admitted to how bad everything was. But poor Daniel, my Long Island brother, was foolish enough to support the food he put out there till the end, which is unfortunately the real reason he went home. And he said spluge in regards to additives to food, which is enough reason to kick his ass to the curb. If there is one things the judges hate more than poorly prepared food, it’s the defense of it. Its understandable that every once in awhile you will mess up, but honestly when you can’t realize you fucked it up, its time to pack up the knives. Next week, Martha Stewart will be paying a visit and I am excited about finding out which woman will lose her shit over it first.

Ugh, the above is the conversation that I had after hearing The 2009 Golden Globe nominations. Hopefully there won’t be some lame ass strike over proper payment on reality show scripts, so I can watch all the actors and celebs schlepping their stuff on TV. Anywhos, the noms are out and some of them make me very very mad! First, let’s get to the worst offense, which is Tom Cruise getting nominated for best supporting actor in “Tropic Thunder” for an unbilled and unfunny piece of shit studio man. Seriously the bit was funny for the minutes and to just hear the sheer stupidity of the people sitting around me who knew nothing about the film, nor Cruise’s “surprise” cameo. I think I am really made about this because if anyone in this should have gotten it its Jay Baruchel. I thought his timing was great, he was able to hold his own against Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. and he genuinely good in his role. Ugh and how is it possible for Peggy Olson’s Elizabeth Moss to be snubbed a nomination for great work in “Mad Men”, but Anna Paquin gets something for True Blood? Readers you might not know this because I jumped on the Mad Men train late, but this show is one of my favorites and I used to watch it on my iPhone from when I walked out my door in the morning to getting off my elevator at work. I will go further into depth about the genius of this show in my top of 2008 next week. But anyways, here is the list of the nominations, courtesy of E!

So last night was the “premiere” of Jimmy Fallon’s webisode/weblog/some other nifty word merging blog and video together on NBC.com, right after the Tonight Show with Jay Leno ended. And while expectations, mine included, have not been high for the one time SNL performer, the video wasn’t a total crash and burn. Personally, I get sick of Fallon within five minutes of seeing him on TV or movies, so I am not sure how people will stand him for an hour, but that’s still left to be seen. Fallon will be taking the reigns from Conan O’Brien beginning in May 2009 when O’Brien makes the big move to the 11:35PM slot, currently held by Leno. We all know why Fallon was chosen over Carson Daly, who currently hosts a desperately drab program on NBC after O’Brien, but I am not sure why NBC didn’t seem to seek out other talent that has talk show experience. Well whats done is done and in preparation for the big move, NBC decided to roll out with this webisodes online so Fallon can warm up and the audience can as well. From last night’s mini look, the only thing I am impressed with is the usage of “The Roots” as his in house band – I mean that’s freaking awesome. I also means that Hip Hop, true hip hop, could have just received its final nail in the coffin of relevancy. I am excited to see what Fallon does with the program, since O’Brien’s first few years on the air didn’t run smoothly but were definite variations in the usual formula for late night.

But Fallon should be wary about his new time slot, especially since ratings for O’Brien’s program have now been coming in second place after Craig Ferguson’s program, which is after the Late Show with David Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel had his greatest ratings sweep last month, so there is a lot of “known” competition for the new host. I also hope that if this doesn’t work, NBC realizes it and finds someone else…I don’t know maybe an actual funny person, who is female, like Chelsea Handler, who is constantly picking up new viewers on her late ngiht program on E! or someone like Amy Sedaris, quirky, offbeat and hysterical when it comes to chit chat. I don’t know just a thought NBC!

In other late night news, Jay Leno has apparently made a deal with NBC to stay on, but in a primetime capacity. Earlier this year, when the conversation became public about Leno departing, as per his contract, as well as Conan O’Brien’s, there was much chatter as to if Leno would go somewhere else where he and 5 Million nightly viewers would be appreciated. Well apparently, NBC didn’t want to lose him or them and has decided to remove all original/serial programming from their 10PM hour to give Leno a primetime talk show, which would be on five nights a week at the 10PM slot.
